Holed up in a cottage in the Chilterns, a young writer strives to write the first great novel of the War, impelled by his own suffering. Outward events and inner crises deflect him from his purpose, and love intervenes in the form of two very different women. A visit to the hallucinatory wreckage of post-war Flanders brings strange repercussions in its wake. Everyone is in some way damaged by the terrible years of the war; in what sense can art be made out of such horror? Adam Thorpe's novel seeks to touch the marrow of this jazz and death-haunted period, which was ironically the most excitingly creative period of the last century. In a language deeply soaked in the time and by means of a beguiling story which gradually haunts its own process, Nineteen Twenty-One vividly recreates the year in which The Waste Land was written, as well as offering a bright mirror to the inner and outer complexities of our own troubled times.Taal: Engels;Afmetingen: 25x197x130 mm;Gewicht: 271,00 gram;Verschijningsdatum: juni 2002;ISBN10: 0099272989;ISBN13: 9780099272984; Engelstalig | Paperback | 2002.

Excerpt from Coal; Its History and Uses: By Professors Green, Miall, Thorpe, Rucker, and Marshall of the Yorkshire College The origin of this book may be told in a very few words. Towards the close of last year Dr. Carpenter, as Secretary to the Gilchrist Educational Trust, sug gested to the Professors of the Yorkshire College that by delivering courses of lectures in connection with the Trust, in some of the larger towns of the West Riding, they might aid in the good work which is being done by means of Dr. Gilchrist's bequest. No special conditions were attached to the proposal. Each lecturer was to be free to choose his own subject, con sistent, of course, with the general provisions of the Trust. It was thought, however, that the educational value of the lectures would be increased by selecting some common and familiar subject, sufficiently com? Prehensive to allow each lecturer to treat it in a manner appropriate to his own studies and to the teaching department which he represents in the College. Various reasons conduced to the selection of the particular subject of Coal. It was not too ambi tious; it was sufficiently familiar and sufficiently com prehensive; and, above all, it had a direct, practical.
