I heard the boss telling the guys he really depended on, like Cutler or Harry, that they should start settling down, get married, buy a house. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with any of that, but the boss wasn’t giving that advice solely from the goodness of his heart; it was better for him to have a crew of guys with mortgages and wives and kids and no union to back them up. Then they’re tied to him and he can tighten the screws a little more when he has to. Who’s gonna walk off the job first in a fit of insensible pride: a guy living in a cheap, no-lease apartment or a guy who has to put a new roof on the house and make sure he has enough to keep the kids in Catholic school? How were we supposed to get along by doing what we were told when, if we do what we’re told, we end up with the short end of the stick every time? We were all breaking our backs so Wayne could give his little girl pony riding lessons or something. We were all family as long as our arms and legs weren’t broken and we could carry pianos. All of us seemed to be stuck at this glass ceiling. Lives were supposed to progress in degrees of security; a normal person should have some money in the bank, move on to better neighborhoods, and accumulate possessions as they go along.... You want to be working toward a goal other than making someone else comfortable. Maybe the idea that the past years had been wasted — with no progress made and no opportunities opening — brought about the desire to cheat, just for that sense of security padding the space between myself and dead zero. Paulie had been talking for a long time about busting into houses and he made the plan sound reasonable, like there was hardly a chance to get caught as long as his girlfriend got a job as a dog walker: “Because, you know, they give the fucking house keys to the dog walkers. You believe that?” Even if we copied some of Allison’s keys, we wouldn’t have to use them for a year or so. We could wait until Allison no longer worked for the place. We could wait until the dogs died of old age. Daydreaming, we had enough patience to last several lifetimes — in real time, hardly any. I read once in some sporting magazine where Floyd Patterson wrote — or, more likely, had someone else write — about getting knocked out. I don’t remember if he was talking about Cassius or Sonny Liston, but he said going down was almost a gratifying feeling, a relief when that punch, one he knew he wouldn’t see, finally came. He knew it was coming eventually; he was going to lose. You can brace yourself for the punches you can see, but the ones that just explode at the side of your head, those are the ones that knock you cold. When he caught one of those, completely unprepared, Patterson said that the darkness crept up from his knees to his forehead, his legs dissolved and he felt nothing but peace. He enjoyed the quiet enveloping him. The lights went down. No more fighting, no more struggling. All conflict and worry were gone for a brief few moments. As he described it, he saw his family and friends sitting ringside and he wanted to crawl over and tell them that everything would be okay; he wanted to climb through the ropes and kiss people, telling them all would be fine now. Patterson said he always awoke with a greater love for humanity after getting knocked out. Basically, he got to commit a little bit of suicide every once in a while and woke up feeling better, believing he was among the people who cared for him and he had lost nothing but his title — the fight was over. I understand wanting that. But, unfortunately, to achieve that peace, you have to first become heavyweight champ of something. Quitting for most people was just an acceptance of failure — of a dead end with nothing to look forward to except a paycheck and maybe the unstable peace of believing your lot in life is good enough.
