More specifically, it explores the role of culture in modern societies and the side effects that result when that role is distorted. Culture in this particular context is like the mass psychology of a society; the ideas that shape our world-views, the rules we live by, the goals we share, and the experiences that we take for granted. The problem I will attempt to describe is that our modern economic system and the ideologies that support it are now so overwhelming influential that the cultural aspects of society have been, and are still being, transformed by their power in deleterious ways. This book is an effort to weave together various facts and theories to create a reasonable, and reasonably coherent, narrative that answers some of the questions that have troubled me these last few years, essentially trying to understand what’s going on in American society. I wanted to produce a scholarly and rigorous work of research that will also be accessible to readers outside of our academic communities. To accomplish this, I use scholarly sources of information with appropriate references to organize the technical material and also provide as many simple descriptions as possible of the material with timely examples drawn from current literature and news to illustrate and explain my arguments. The benefit of this book is it addresses the effects of this interference on modern life, especially the psychological, social, and political effects, to explain our current problems using many real life examples. I argue that the transformative nature of capitalism is demonstrably changing and, perhaps, weakening societies around the world. The economic power unleashed by global capitalism translates into social and psychological power in ways that transforms the human experience both inside and out, and that people around the world are becoming willing participants in a process that does not materially benefit them and may even harm them, all because they are being persuaded that they are part of the winning side of things, and that the side-effects of capitalism are minor and uninteresting. These, I hope to show, are faulty assumptions at best. This book basically follows an orderly trajectory. First, I provide a conceptual framework, based mainly on the works of the social theorist Talcott Parsons and Max Weber, in order to describe the basic structures and functions of society. Next I attempt to provide a broad description of culture with a particular emphasis on the functional reproductive processes by which cultural values and rules are established and perpetuated within society. This is a major component of the book, since my general thesis is that our cultural processes have been “colonized,” to borrow a term from Habermas, by the economic system. This colonization process is advanced at this point in our history, and seems to me unlikely to be easily reversed. Unfortunately, this process is also harmful to humans, and violates many of our traditional ideas about the common good, social welfare, and so on. Next I describe the power of capitalism, not only as a set of economic principles and processes, but as an ideology. The drift from liberal capitalism to consumer capitalism and corporatism is described and placed into context in terms of modern life. Finally I describe the effects of capitalism on our social and political systems, paying particular attention to the more troubling aspects of these effects, and I speculate about the near future and the potential social transformations that may result from the persistent and increasing power and influence of the economic system on our lives. From its beginnings, liberation theology has provoked a wide and diverse range of responses from a multitude of critics-theological, methodological, political, ecclesiastical. Liberation Theology and Its Critics is a comprehensive and systematic explication of these diverse criticisms, as well as a reasoned and rigorous defense of liberation theology. McGovern states his aim thus: to understand better the world of Latin America and the culture and conditions which prompt a liberation theology, while at the same time giving expression to some of the misgivings that many US Americans experience when reading about liberation theology. Liberation Theology and Its Critics begins by discussing the place of theology itself in liberation theology. The book offers an historical overview, shows us what liberation theologians see as most distinctive in their work, addresses the biblical interpretations and major areas of theology stressed by liberation theologians, and discusses other theologians' critiques. Next, McGovern explicates the use of social and political analysis in liberation theology, which has been one of the areas of particular controversy. He focuses on such issues as dependency theory, Marxism, class struggle, socialism, and the Nicaraguan revolution, addressing throughout the concerns raised by a range of critics, from the Vatican to Michael Novak. Finally, McGovern explores the role of the church and how liberation theology is lived out in practice. He examines base communities, ecclesiology, current political trends in Latin America, the varying status of liberation theology as well as its most recent developments. McGovern demonstrates that liberation theology encompasses a wide spectrum of theologians with different styles and emphases.
