This is a catalogue of Adi Nes photographs up until 2004 which was published jointly by the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Art Museums of San Francisco, the Legion of Honor, for the comprehensive photo exhibit of Adi Nes works in these institutions and in honor of winning the Constantiner Photography Award in 2003. In this comprehensive catalogue can be found photographs from three series by Adi Nes: Soldiers (including Nes famous Last Supper photograph) Boys and Prisoners. The Prisoners series was first published in the international fashion magazine Vogue Hommes International. In the catalogue, which is designed graphically as if it were a fashion magazine, Professor Mordechai Omer writes in the Preface about the motif of fire and desire in Adi Nes creations. The article by Nili Goren, the photography curator at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, analyzes Adi Nes Prisoners in the context of his earlier works while the article by Dr. Daniell Cornell, a curator at the San Francisco Museum of Art, relates to the political and homoerotic elements of the artist s works. About the Prisoners series The Prisoners series of 12 photographs was produced in 2003 for the fashion magazine Vouge Hommes International. It was published in the September issue of that year which was dedicated to the Middle East during the anniversary of the attacks on the Twin Towers. Nes photographs were spread over an impressive 10 pages, thus assuring his membership among a group of international photographers such as Cindy Sherman, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Annie Leibovitz, Nan Goldin and others who had also created works for fashion magazines. The series, shot with a prison backdrop, plays on the contrast between the worlds of fashion and prison. By doing so, Nes created a relationship between different types of imprisonment on different levels: people imprisoned in social classes, in the world of images, in personal concepts or relationships. Nes drew inspiration for this series from the life the director and writer, Jean Genet, and also from his military reserve duty as a guard at a military prison. Nes uses the language of the fashion world and fashion photography to create a biting statement about Israeli reality. The series compares the Israeli society with a prison in which Jews, Arabs, foreign workers, the old and the young all exist side-by-side. The pictures evoke a compressed, masculine atmosphere. The project was cast mostly by people who are not professional models, wearing clothes fashioned by internationally known designers, which fits them casually. In these pictures Nes compares exhibiting fashions with the walks prisoners take in the prison yard, and the row of models with prisoner line-ups. The presence of the Israeli society appears in the metaphorical image of those Sentenced to Death. In these pictures can be found portraits and staged situations of Arresting a Suspect; Prisoner Line-up ; Walking in the Prison Yard ; Prisoners in Their Cells; Hands Protruding from Behind Bars and more. At the same time the Prisoners series was published, the photographs were exhibited at museums in Tel Aviv, San Francisco, New York, Montreal, Paris and elsewhere.
