Daphne Du Maurier, Books, Fiction and Literature, My Cousin Rachel: Film Tie In, Daphne Du Maurier was born in London on May 13, 1907 and educated in Paris. In 1932, she married Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Browning. She began writing short stories of mystery and suspense for magazines in 1928, a collection of which appeared as The Apple Tree in 1952. Her first novel, The Loving Spirit, was published in 1931. Her tightly woven, highly suspenseful plots and her strong characters make her stories perfect for adaptation to film or television. Among her many novels that were made into successful films are Jamaica Inn (1936), Rebecca (1938), Frenchman's Creek (1941), Hungry Hill (1943), My Cousin Rachel (1952), and The Scapegoat (1957). Her short story, The Birds (1953), was brought to the screen by director Alfred Hitchcock in a treatment that has become a classic horror-suspense film. She died on April 19, 1989 at the age of 81. Sally Beauman was born in Paignton, Devon, England on July 25, 1944. She read English literature at Girton College, Cambridge. While living in the United States, she worked as a staff writer for New York magazine before becoming an associate editor. She moved to London in 1970 and became the editor of Queen Magazine. After that, she worked as a freelancer for Vogue, the Daily Telegraph, the Sunday Times, and the Observer. She was the first winner of the Catherine Pakenham award for journalism. Under the pseudonym Vanessa James, Beauman wrote seven Harlequin romances in the 1980s including The Fire and the Ice and Give Me This Night. The first novel written under her own name was Destiny, which was published in 1987. Her other novels included Dark Angel, Lovers and Liars, Danger Zones, Sextet, Rebecca's Tale, The Landscape of Love, and The Visitors. She died of cancer on July 7, 2016 at the age of 71.

'As mysterious and enthralling as du Maurier's other great novel, Rebecca . . . A masterpiece of tension' Guardian Orphaned at an early age, Philip Ashley is raised by his cousin, Ambrose. Resolutely single, Ambrose delights in making Philip his heir, knowing that he will treasure his beautiful Cornish estate. But Philip's world is shattered when Ambrose sets off on a trip to Florence. There he falls in love and marries - and then dies suddenly in suspicious circumstances. Before long, the new widow - Philip's cousin Rachel - arrives in England. Despite himself, Philip is drawn to the beautiful, mysterious woman. But could she have caused Ambrose's death? This special edition includes a foreword by the director and screenwriter of the film, Roger Michell 'Du Maurier is a storyteller whose sole aim is to bewitch and beguile. And in My Cousin Rachel she does both, with Rebecca looking fondly over her shoulder' New York Times 'A fiendishly clever novel, with an ending that continues to haunt and trouble its readers' Justine Picardie, Daily Telegraph, Taschenbuch, 04.05.2017.

I remembered that morning, when she cried, she had rested he head against my heart. I had put my arms about her, for a moment, and laid my face against her hair. I wanted it to happen again. You always feel that we’re on the verge of a Daphne du Maurier renaissance. Known of course for Rebecca and Jamaica Inn – largely regarded, and sometimes overlooked, as ‘classics’- du Maurier was far more a properly contemporary novelist, equipped with a tremendously dark imagination: this was, after all, the writer who penned the terrifying short tale Don’t Look Now. Like many Du Maurier stories, My Cousin Rachel has been the source of multiple adaptations for film, television and radio and now lives again in the cinema, directed by Notting Hill stalwart Roger Michell and starring Rachel Weisz as the eponymous Rachel. The novel – available both as as this tie-in edition to the new film and the more usual standard edition – charts the story of young Philip, heir-in-waiting to his cousin Ambrose’s sprawling Cornish estate. Ambrose, however, is fated to perish, and in his place stands his widow, the darkly enigmatic Rachel. Philip – the dedicated bachelor – suddenly finds his heart lost to this beautiful newcomer. But is Rachel all that she seems? Passion and paranoia conspire to create a deliciously twisting tale of secrets and lies, with Philip pitched headlong between lust and reason. Towering above it all is Daphne Du Maurier’s creation of Rachel, one of fiction’s great enigmas, the author always one step ahead of our suspicions and sympathies. My Cousin Rachel is masterful stuff from one of our very great writers of the modern thriller, ‘with an ending,’ as Justine Picardie noted in the Telegraph, ‘that continues to haunt and trouble its readers.’This tie-in edition contains a special introduction from director Roger Michell. .
