John Gates of Ripley was ordered to pay 5, he having married the widow of Thomas Parker, grocer, in Derby, and carried on the business. The sequel to this little history may be gathered from the following entry:--" We, the Mercers' Company, do hereby certify that the said John Gates, and Elizabeth, his wife, having purchased their emancipation, shall carry on the trade of a grocer in Derby during the term of their natural lives." The last record of prosecution in Derby is on October 3Oth, 1732, when power was given to any member against hawkers and pedlars, or those who exposed goods for sale to the prejudice of the freemen of Derby. A resolution was passed to the effect that those who were put to any expense in prosecuting these offenders should be indemnified by the Mercers' Company. Various persons were proceeded against, but, in some instances, a deputation to the culprit was sent by the Mercers' Company. The Company frequently prosecuted pedlars, and in one year alone 84 was expended for this purpose. Great, indeed, are the changes which have come over this locality since the old map of Derby was drawn. The writer can, in fact, of his own knowledge, testify to many. Where now we have the warehouses and offices of the Great Northern Railway Company, and a dense mass of miscellaneous buildings, there were, within the memory of many living to-day, green fields, with open watercourses having stepping stones here and there, clusters of trees, narrow footpaths, and a few rustic dwellings.
