Excerpt from Memoirs of the Department of Agriculture in India, Vol. 1: Entomological Series The origin of these swarms admits of little doubt when the whole evidence is considered. They were hatched in the locali ties where they were first, seen, spending the hopper stages there and only appearing when full grown, except in parts of Ahmedabad and the Panch Mahals. This statement is based on observation, and is the only inference possible from the reported facts and from investigations into the life history. The large area of grass land especially near the coast of Gujarat was probably full ofsmall and harmless hoppers in the rains of 1903, unnoticed because they were concealed in the long grass. With the ripening of the grass, the hoppers became winged, spent their first few days there, emerged into the crops in search of food and finally packedin swarms for the migration to the Ghat region. This is fully borne out by observation of the young locusts in the rains of 1904. It must be remembered that locusts are not invariably seen or reported, nor is there any record of their occurrence in ordinary years. The distribution of the locusts and their ori gin in 1903 are thus only partially known many localities are probably permanent breeding places, e.g., places in Portuguese territory (goa), the forests of Kanara and other parts of the Wes tern Ghats, without such a fact being now ascertainable. B. P. Standen, Esq., Director of Agriculture, Central Provinces, states that the locusts have been permanently in Nimar and Holkar's territory for four years there are doubtless other such places. A safe statement would appear to be that the main mass of locusts in 1903 was bred in Gujarat, with a contingent from Khandeish and from permanent breeding places in the Ghats and hilly forest tracts in Western India.
