The Barnes & Noble ReviewJohn Brown. Harpers Ferry. Bleeding Kansas. For history buffs, these names evoke dramatic images of early America. For the rest of us, they may ring a faint bell-yes, something important, something historical, something dealing with. what exactly?Reading Russell Banks's novel Cloudsplitter will go a long way toward filling the gaps in your knowledge of antebellum history-but that's not the reason to read it, it's just a fringe benefit. The story is captivating. Though it recounts in engrossing detail some of the most dramatic moments in American history, what will keep you in thrall is the very personal epic at its center, the story of one man's relationship with his father. Owen Brown, the son of the infamous abolitionist John Brown, tells this story 40 years after his father's death. Now an old man on the brink of death, Owen lives in a shack on an isolated California mountaintop. A researcher who has just paid him a visit is working on a book about his father's legendary 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry, in which Brown led a band of abolitionists who took over a federal arsenal. Their intention was to incite a battle between the North and the South that would free the slaves and bring about slavery's downfall; instead of the stunning victory he imagined, Brown and his followers were swiftly overrun by federal troops, and he was later executed. Owen rebuffs his visitor, but after she is gone the story he refused to divulge to her begins to pour from him. The story he recounts is that of a man with an unfailing belief that God has chosen him and his family to do somethingabout slavery. John Brown moves his family of 11 children to North Elba, New York, so that they can help a nearby settlement of free blacks learn to farm and open a new route on the Underground Railroad, transporting runaway slaves to Canada. Brown regularly preaches about the evils.
