Language: English Brand New Book. From the award-winning author of Half of a Yellow Sun, a powerful story of love, race and identity. As teenagers in Lagos, Ifemelu and Obinze fall in love. Their Nigeria is under military dictatorship, and people are fleeing the country if they can. The self-assured Ifemelu departs for America. There she suffers defeats and triumphs, finds and loses relationships, all the while feeling the weight of something she never thought of back home: race. Obinze had hoped to join her, but post-9/11 America will not let him in, and he plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Thirteen years later, Obinze is a wealthy man in a newly democratic Nigeria, while Ifemelu has achieved success as a blogger. But after so long apart and so many changes, will they find the courage to meet again, face to face? Fearless, gripping, spanning three continents and numerous lives, the National Book Critics Circle Award-winning Americanah is a richly told story of love and expectation set in today s globalized world.

Americanah , published in 2013, revolves around a Nigerian born woman named Ifemelu, who has been living in America for almost fifteen years. As she sits in a saloon to get her hair braided, she tells her hairdresser that she plans to return to Nigeria. The novel then starts with flashbacks of Ifemelu's life. The protagonist lives in Nigeria, and is in a relationship with Obinze, a professor's son. The country is under military dictatorship, and Ifemelu moves to the US for her higher studies. Obinze goes to England to seek his fortunes, and the two childhood sweethearts plan to return to Nigeria some day to be reunited. Ifemelu, now in the US, finds that she is identified as black for the first time in her life. This intelligent, smart and beautiful girl realizes that her race and accent make it hard for her to get a job. Her classmates assume that she has a better understanding of African-American struggles because of her skin colour. Obinze, now in London, starts to work illegally, and soon gets deported back to Nigeria. Both these characters experience a loss of identity and feel lonely.
