Her beauty was undiminished; her fetes and ceremonies magnificent; foreigners came flocking to her in ever-increasing numbers. The whole Venetian settecento appears like one grand festival, all enjoyment and comfortable lack of moral stress. And so we find that the most typical Venetian of this period was neither sea-captain, nor merchant, nor Doge, but a brazen adventurer, Giacomo Casanova, who was as adept in skulduggery as he was in the practice of pretentious philosophical doctrines. His personality therefore presides over this study of every aspect of social life in a splendid city in a state of decline by one who, until his recent death, had made a lifelong study of Italian culture. He describes the state of Venetian society in the eighteenth century in all its layers, the nobility, the bourgeoisie and the poor; the fetes, carnivals, amusements; amorous pursuits and the position of women; religious life and conditions in the monasteries and convents; intellectual life, painting, music and the theatre. .
