This book has the virtue of reminding us of daily realities when the joys of creation did not always suffice to compensate for the difficulties of material existence. Jacques Letheve, himself a specialist, opens the doors of the artists' studios for us (the studios of the apprentices as well as those of the masters), guides us from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts to the Academie de France at Rome, and finally takes a look into the account books of painters and sculptors in order to give us an idea of the conditions in which both geniuses and journeyman painters created their works. .
