London: Collins. Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket. 1971. First English Edition. Hardcover. 0002117916 . Translated by Norman Denny. Dustjacket has discolourisation along front edge folds otherwise, a fine copy in very good unclipped dustjacket. In July 1945 Kurt Gerstein, SS officer, committed suicide in a Paris prison where he was awaiting trial on war crimes charges. So ended one of the most astounding and controversial stories of the war, for this extraordinary, bold and magnetic man, whose world was out of joint more thoroughly than Hamlet's, claimed that his work in extermination camps was undertaken solely to find out what was going on, to expose it to the world and to mitigate the suffering in so far as in him lay. So remarkable were his story and personality that Rolf Hochhuth later used him as one of the principal characters in his play, The Representative. It was Gerstein's tragedy that in 1945 no one believed him: hence his despair and suicide. Since then the argument about him has continued: was he or was he not what he claimed? Pierre Joifroy, French journalist and novelist, believes that he was. To prove it, Joffroy has spent years tracking down every person still alive who was involved, however peripherally, in the Gerstein tragedy; he has visited all the places central to the story; and in this dramatic narrative he switches back and forth, without comment, between what happened in the past and what he learned in the 'sixties, interleaving it with extracts from the now famous Gerstein Report on the extermination camps, which appears in full in an Appendix. His book is a remarkable document on an even more remarkable man. ; 220 x 150mm; 319 pages .
