Cloth, 1974, xii, 500pp. Very good copy in very good dustjacket. Unmarked except for previous owner's name on inside. This book intensively examines China's autocracy during the Yung-cheng reign (1723-1735), a crucial period of the Ch'ing dynasty and a climactic development of the traditional Chinese state. With both coercive and persuasive methods, the Yung-cheng Emperor was able to reshape all the influential political forces - aristocracy, bureaucracy, and the local elite - after his ideal. Each group took new spirit, behaved in line with the prescribed code, and worked to enhance his code. Their transformation was perpetuated by the palace-memorial system and the Grand Council, two important autocratic instruments.
