Its current revival is largely due to the indefatigable efforts of one man - William Lincoln. He 're-discovered' marquetry by accident when in business producing expendables from veneer, and from that he went on to build up a world-wide trade in marquetry materials. Past President of the Marquetry Society, he is himself a skilled marquetarian. Technical manuals in this field are few, for the craft was once veiled in secrecy by the trade guilds. Many of the methods of the masters died with them and have been re-developed by trial and error. This book describes the various techniques used in different parts of the world, and discusses every aspect of the design, creation. cutting, laying and polishing, shading and mounting of marquetry pictures.
