New York, NY: Avenel Books/Crown Publishers, 1985. First Edition, First Pinting 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Arthur Rackham (Illustrator with 8 color plates). Text/NEW & Bright. 1985 Special 1st Edition, Printing "A". Gilt embossed red boards/Fine. DJ/VG; strong w/edge wear. Gift inscription to fep verso. Gulliver's Travels (or, Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World), was first published 1726. 18th Century fiction by Anglo-Irish writer & clergyman Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) who, never left the British Isles, said the book is meant "to vex the world rather than divert it" and succeeds. Travels of surgeon & captain of ships, Lemuel Gulliver, an instant success; dramatist John Gay (1685-1732) of Beggar's Opera fame, said: "It is universally read, from the cabinet council to the nursery." In 4 parts: PART I, A Voyage to Lilliput [May 1699-April 1702]: Gulliver is imprisoned by petty, narrow minded, 6 inch tall Lilliputians; II, A Voyage to Brobdingnag [June 1702-June 1706]: Gulliver is in west coast North America where grass grows tall as trees! Found by a 72 foot tall farmer, he is exhibited as an oddity then sold to the queen. A box is made to carry him about. Gulliver's description of Europe's use of guns & cannons horrifies the king. Carried off by a giant eagle, the box falls to sea --- rescued & home; III, A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib & Japan [August 1706- April 1710]: Pirates cast Gulliver in Laputa, a kingdom devoted to music, mathematics & astronomy, where he witnesses social ill consequent from derelict governance --- time wise, same as when England's Royal Grand Academy focused on softening marble for pillow use, and solving suspected political consipracies from excrement left by likely suspects! Then before home, a magician arranges a meeting for him w/historical ghosts to discuss "ancients versus moderns" issues. Home, Gulliver, thinks of retirement, but boredom soon sets in; Part IV, A Voyage to the Land of the Houyhnhnms [Sept 1710-Dec 1715]. A mutiny (crew chooses piracy). Gulliver, cast off in a landing boat, meets the Houyhnhnms, a hospitable, rational, incorruptible race of horses, and, rulers of Yahoos, human in features & form --- some good, some evil, a few blessed w/a mite more sense of reason. Gulliver admires & embraces Houyhnhnms' way of life. But since he is human (or, Yahoo), carrying infectious, vacillating convictions, provided a canoe, is banished. A ship manned by Portuguese Yahoos gets him home. His 16 years & 7 months of travel leaves Gulliver unable live out life as just another "English Yahoo" --- he stays home, avoids wife & family, carries private speculations in the garden, and, visits daily w/horses in the stable. Illustrated w/8 color plates by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939).
