This book is about group life in general, as well as about group life of a board-of-directors as that 'mighty secret group' at the top of nearly all private and public organisations. This organisational peer task group has received its organisational delegation of authority from the private or public owners of the organisation. It does most of its work during board-meetings. The author provides a new 'group in action' world-view and approach to recover and describe what a group is really doing collectively when it engages in group activities. He then applies this new research, consulting-coaching-mentoring, and training approach to recover and describe, in a combined practical and scholarly way, what a board-of-directors is doing how during a meeting of the full board. Only primary data, thus recordings complemented by ethnographic notes, are used. What does this Book Intend to Achieve? This book is first of all aimed to be practical. Indeed, it introduces a new way of looking at groups that provides breakthrough insights and results. Subsequently this new group in action perspective and approach becomes applied to a board of directors as the group at the top of most organisations. Simultaneously the book provides several scholarly contributions to methodological and content knowledge in three disciplines (management sciences, sociology and social psychology) and three fields (corporate governance, conversation analysis and ethno-methodology). Who is the Intended Audience of this Book? This book is addressed to a large and varied audience, basically anyone who is interested - for whatever reason - either in knowing how to evaluate and improve group effectiveness, and/or in knowing how an organisation is directed. The book does not require the reader to have any specific knowledge or experience.
