It was the custom years ago, and possibly still is, to expose for sale miniature copies of this coloss of the national ecclesiastical chieftain, which looks down from its tall doric column in the Necropolis on the vast hive of business ; and with a similar piety to that of the good Alexander Severus, who, in Roman imperial days, gathered into his domestic oratory the busts of renowned seers, a Scot was often found setting up in his cabinet the venerable figure. The statue, modelled after an authentic portrait in possession of the University, and uncovered, in 1825, with a festal display of civic and religious devotion, exhibits the Reformer robed in the primitive presbyterian gown and cap, a long commanding beard streaming down his breast. At various visits to the city, as occasion allowed, the foot, especially on a Sunday, climbed to the noble height whichbears the monument; for there, in unison with thethoughts of faith and Christian valour which are inspired by the sight of it, the cathedral, the finest ecclesiastical relic of Scotland, reposes at its base, preserved from the 'rascally mob,' as the Reformer dubbed the ignorant zealots of his day, by the affection of the citizens.
