This book is about the day-to-day life of a District Officer in the Northern Frontier Province of Kenya during the period 1937 - 1943. The author (later Sir John Thorp CMG, MBE) records with humour, warmth and insite the difficult physical conditions and human problems encountered during his early years as a British colonial administrator amongst the Turkana, Rendille, Boran, Gelubba (Merille) and other tribes. He was first based on the western side of Lake Rudolph (now Lake Turkana) where he was one of only four Europeans in a desolate, arid area of about 77,000 square kilometers. He later was transferred to Marsabit, east of the lake, during the early years of World War II when Kenya was threatened with invasion by the Italians from Ethiopia (Abyssinia). The arrival of the white South African forces and the impact of their culture on the local people and vice-versa is vividly described. The book is a 'must' for all those interested in African Colonial and World War II history, sociology, anthropology and adventure. The book is illustrated by the author's own photographs and sketch maps.
