The celebration of a one hundredth birthday by a voluntary organisation is not a frequent occurrence: a bicentennial is even more uncommon. The Board of Trustees of the Sick and Indigent Roomkeepers Society consequently saw the year 1990 arrive with a feeling of pride that despite periods of difficulty, and occasionally indebtedness, it has survived to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of its founding. It faces its third century with confidence that its work in relieving poverty and distress will be pursued even more intensively than before. To mark the bicentennial, the Trustees have commissioned this history of the Society and were fortunate in their choice of author. Ms Deirdre Lindsay, a doctoral student at Trinity College, has produced an absorbing account of the affairs of the Society from its first years. It is a valuable addition to the corpus of studies on the social history of Dublin in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
