Used paperback in overall good condition; scarce title, 117pp, b&w illustrations, NOT ex-library. Interior untanned, mostly clean, with several small grubby marks from reading. Author's private inscription on half-title page; text unmarked, no writing, no highlighting of any kind. Small creases to page corners and edges throughout the book. Outer page edges look aged and grubby. Good secure binding. Cover shows shelfwear, scuffing to edges, wear to tips of corners, moderate creasing. Spine free of vertical creases, showing gentle wear only. --- The book recalls the history of one of London's most colourful street markets from its earliest origins in the twelfth century to its demise in August 1939. The Old Caledonian Market was one of London's living legends for stories abounded of fabulous jewels and priceless pictures being found amongst the junk on the blue cobbled stones. People flocked to the market in their thousands to hunt for such bargains, and in amongst the shoppers were the buskers, the conmen, the artists, the film stars and the pickpockets. Life at The Cally was a colourful hotchpotch of laughter and sadness, rags and riches, glamour, excitement and glorious confusion. Stories of murders, besieged bulls and bawdy behaviour are still alive in the minds of not only the local residents, but also people scattered all over the world today. Some of these weird and wonderful tales are recorded here in UP THE CALLY. for posterity.
