It is told against the background of Italian political unification which had just been completed, and of a murderous regime that a conniving monarchy had installed in Rome. Three well-known Italian anti-fascists sought refuge in Australia. Francesco Fantin, a labourer, and Omero Schiassi, a lawyer, arrived in 1924, the year the Italian Fascists murdered Matteotti, the Socialist leader in the parliament. The Fascists completely repressed the parliament in 1926. Fantin was interned in South Australia as an 'enemy alien' in 1942, together with well-known Fascists, and was there murdered by one of them. Schiassi survived in franciscan poverty, persecuted by the Italian consulate, and vilified by Italian 'notables'. Massimo Montagnana, a scientist, came to Australia in 1940, fleeing anti-Jewish laws. These early Italian Resisters found an Australia imbued with racist prejudice and with strong establishment sympathy for Fascism. This is the story of these three men - and their companions - who determined 'never [to] give in', but to resist Fascism to the end. It is a great Australian political story, and a homage by the author, George Venturini, to all in the Italian Resistance who restored Italy to Giustizia e Libertà. The author graduated in classics, arts, social sciences and in law from the universities of Ferrara, Italy, and Northwestern, Chicago.
