This is an annotated bibliography of Catholic books in English printed abroad or secretly in England at a time when Catholic printing was prohibited in England and such books, when discovered by the authorities, were seized and destroyed. It includes all the 930 items listed in the authors' A Catalogue of Catholic Books in English..., 1956 (A&R) except for a handful which, for reasons of consistency, were described in volume I of the present work (Scolar Press, 1989), and it adds a further twenty-five on which information has come to light more recently. The annotations, historical, literary and bibliographical, are very much fuller than those in A&R and include a vast amount of evidence now brought together for the first time. The true authors of many anonymous and pseudonymous books are identified and many books issued with a false imprint, or no imprint at all, are assigned to particular presses. In each entry, up to fifteen locations are given where known. A concordance links the entries with those in A&R to facilitate cross-reference from one to the other, and indexes of titles, printers and publishers, and persons (including foreign authors) mentioned in the text are provided. The volume concludes with a short list of Addenda and Corrigenda to volume I. PDF, 02.03.2017.

Book Description: In 1956 Allison and Rogers published A Catalogue of Catholic Books in English Printed Abroad Secretly in England, 1558-1640. Known simply as A & R, it is the standard listing of the clandestine vernacular output of English Catholics during that period. Now, after more than thirty years work, Allison and Rogers have produced a substantially updated, comprehensive catalogue to be published in two interlocking volumes. This first volume describes books which are linked to specific English Catholic writers, including translators and editors, or to various English bodies, and nearly two hundred other publications which concern English Catholic affairs. It is a major reference tool for historians and bibliographers. 'The one thing that has characterised the two editors in everything they have done is their careful and painstaking scholarship, and that is evident throughout this work...this monument will stand for a long time and serve students of the history, religion, and literature of early modern Europe for many years to come' The Catholic Historical Review 'a remarkable achievement...If there is such a thing as an absolute bibliography, then this is it' TLS A.F. Allison had special responsibility for early printed books at the British Museum Library, while D.M. Rogers was head of Special Collections in the Department of Printed Books at the Bodleian Library. Both have written widely and together founded, in 1951, the periodical 'Biographical Studies', later re-named 'Recausant History'. : Review: '...ARCR is much more than a work of reference. It has opened up a hitherto disregarded hinterland of European intellectual life - but unlike so many books on intellectual history, it is all fact and no flannel'. TLS '..a masterly study and an essential guide..' Antiquarian Book Monthly Review 'This new "A & R' provides scholars with an outstanding resource for studying English Catholicism' Sixteenth Century Journal. 'It is a triumph of patient bibliographic skill and an invaluable scholarly tool.' Religious Studies Review. 'This bibliography will be indispensable to students of English Roman Catholicism in the period up to 1640.' Times Literary Supplement '...a masterly achievement...' Sixteenth Century Journal 'Both volumes are superbly cross-referenced and organized.' Sixteenth Century Journal '...will continue to be the essential refernce tool for work on what the authors call the English Counter-Reformation.' Sixteenth Century Journal 'these volumes constitute a comprehensive listing of works essential in any serious study of the English Counter-Reformation' American Reference Books Annual 'a remarkable achievement...If there is such a thing as an absolute bibliography, then this is it' TLS on volume I : About the Author: A.F.
