Asia in those days I invite you to share in the atmosphere of the social life of those first European traders, missionaries and official representatives in this tropical paradies of that time long ago, paying early morning social calls and spending the afternoons picnicking in the country or promenading down broad thoroughfares in horse-drawn carriages. Enter into the lavish evening gatherings of rustling silks, stylish banquets and enchanting dinner dances, dressed in magnificent costumes of the finest thread and for the Governor's ball, the lastest fashions from Paris and London, just arrived by ship. Apart from the dangers of mutiny and piracy, those on board often endured drought-like conditions in the tropical heat, with water and provisions severely rationed. Restricted to one cup of water a day and unable even to capture rain water in canvas, they would grow weak and begin to dispair. Understandably, they had one wish, that once before dying they might be able to drink as much water as they wanted, until they could not drink no more. Then, suddenly, a cry would be heard from the formast: "Land!" After an hour had passed, those assembled on deck would catch their first glimpse of palm trees and white, sandy beaches "in the shining East". It was a sight to make pulses race! A celebration would break out on board, with water and food distributed freely to all. The adventure-filled exploits of our forefathers deserve our acknowledgment and appreciation, for they prepared the wayfor our current relations with the East. So do take a moment to enjoy this entertaining jouney into the past. Mit zahlreichen Abbildungen. Asia in those days A glimpse into Far East The Social Life in Asia from the 16th through the 19th Centuries by Thomas Brandt Introduction: Enough of searching through dust-covered 16 - 19th century newspapers, journals, official registers, books, travelogues, diaries, letters and postcards! Its time to embark upon a fascinating journey into the past, one that is filled with amusing comments an European impressions of Asia In Those Days. I invite you to share in the atmosphere of the social life of those first European traders, missionaries and official representives in this tropical pradise of that time long ago, paying early morning social calls and spending the afternoon picnicking in the country or promenanding down broad thoroughfares in horse-drawn carriages. Enter into the lavish evening gatherings of rustling silks, stylish banquets and enchanting dinner dances, dressed in magnificent costumes of the final thread and for the Governments ball, the latest fashions from Paris and London, just arrived by ship. Youll read, as well, of the hardships experienced at sea on that month-long voyage to the East: of sharing space on a 45 meter-long sailing ship with 350 other passangers, all male, who hadnt bathed since the start of the trip. Among them could be found adventurers, runaways and prisoners. Every third person on board, whether sailor of passanger, fell ill during the voyage. One of ervery ten died, their corpses thrown overboard to be eaten by the sharks. Storms at sea could last for days, producing waves capable of breaking the masts of ships struggling hundreds of meters above the ocean bottom. Apart from the dangers of mutiny and pircy, those on board often endured drought-like conditions in the tropical heat, with water and provisions severely rationed. Restricted to one cup of water a day and unable even to capture rainwater in canvas, they would grow weak and begin to despair. Understandably, they had one wish, that once before dying they might be able to drink as much water as they wanted, until they could no more. Then, suddenly, a cry would be heard from the foremast: Land! After an hour had passed, those assembled on deck would catch their first glimpse of palm trees and white sandy beaches in the shining East. It was a sight to make pulses race! A celebration would break out on board, with water and food distributed freely to all. For many a traveler, life in the tropics began in cities like Calcutta (Town of the Old Palaces), Batavia, Singapore, Canton and elsewhere. For the majority of those travelers, it was also a life spent in the presence of constant dangers, including life-threatening diseases. A number of towns in the East Indies were even described at the time as being a graveyard for Europeans, and with good reason. Many Europeans succumbed to disease within weeks af their arrival. Under those conditions, it is understandable that the social life in such places reflected a kind of mad desire to live each moment to the fullest. But the workday also had its own set of challanges and pleasures to offer: selecting spices, testing the quality of tea leaves, converting those who believed in false gods, administrating settlements and ensuring military security. Another aspect of daily life was the anxious wait for a letter from home, a period which could last from 150 to 450 days - 10.000 hour. After years in the tropics, the homesick traveler would once gain board a sailing ship, braced for the danger-filled, months-long journey home. The adventure-filled exploits of our forefathers deserve our acknowledgement and appreciation, for they prepared the way for our current relations with the East. So do take a moment to enjoy this entertaining jouney into the past.
