Although the field of sleep medicine has long been investigated, it is until the last few years, that more investigations are being conducted to aid understanding of this field. As such, there is a lag in most of the training programs on this topic. The aim of this book is to educate psychiatrists about the bidirectional relationship between sleep medicine and psychiatry. It would also serve as a quick reference for providers who are interested in increasing their knowledge of the relationship between sleep and behavior or are struggling with certain aspects of sleep medicine in their patients. This book would consist of several chapters: an introduction about why psychiatrist should familiarize themselves with sleep medicine as well as how to use the book will be the opening section. A second chapter will be dedicated to the classification of sleep disorders as International Classification of Sleep –third edition (ICSD-3) and how in some disorders they might be different than Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – fifth edition (DSM-5). Coverage will also include the role of neurotransmitters as they pertain both to psychiatric considerations as well as sleep medicine pathology. Since insomnia represents a common and major challenge in patients with psychiatric disorders, a focus on its treatment will be dedicated to few chapters. A section about cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and educating psychiatrist about how to do this modality. Since mindfulness based CBT therapy are showing effectiveness, a chapter will be dedicated to this type therapy as well. A chapter about medication management will also be dedicated. Hard cover.
