Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - This book presents an analysis of the HIV epidemic in South Africa in terms of the theoretical approach that draws on Critical Medical Anthropology, which recognizes that HIV must be viewed in light of the capitalist world system; understanding HIV within the context of encompassing political and economic forces. This book aims to contribute to understanding the historical, political, social, economic and cultural complexities that influence the spread of HIV in South Africa by presenting a number of issues that create the social environment in which the epidemic spreads. While the idea that political and economic forces influence health is not new, the actual practice of documenting these connections remains rare. This book insists on the necessity for a gendered reading of the social, cultural, economic and political contexts. I argue that the underlying political and economic factors are primarily determinants of the form the epidemic has taken, but in tackling the issues, prevailing power differences and gender ideologies will have to be transformed. 144 pp. Englisch, Books.
