BRAHMANISM AND THE MAHA BHARATA. THERE are in Sanskrit literature four distinctly marked periods. First, the Vedic, which we hare examined, -- joyous age of simple prayers and kindly gods and family independence. Second, the Brahmanical period; therefore we come now into a new atmosphere of thought. We leave behind us the gods which belong to all the Aryan race, and go on to speak of those which are distinctively Hindu. Their new gods represent one phase of the Aryan nature, its mysticism. Another phase, its energy, is displayed in the epic poem of the Maha Bharate. So our subject is the rise of Brahmanism, and the Maha Bharata. In our last chapter we examined the Rig Veda, which is called sometimes a sanhita. The word means a collection, and we found the Rig Veda to be one general collection of hymns and prayers. In it we saw worshipped the sun, the sky, the dawn; finally, one god, the lord of all these, a mysterious self-existent person, called sometimes Asoura-Medhas, the wise being; sometimes Viswakarman, the maker of all things. But the new religion is a denial of all these. One of the poets said these gods are only names; still he maintained that there was a real god, one alone; but, instead of making him a masculine name, they now made him a neuter name. They considered neuter names to be higher than either masculine or feminine. They wanted to get as far away from human nature as they could to express this divine being. They gave him two neuter names, --Atman, which belongs to philosophy, and to which I shall allude in the Sanskrit metaphysics; and Brahman, which belongs to religion and literature.
