Über Raffaele Nigro: Born (1947) in Melfi, he now lives in Bari, where he works as a journalist for RAI. His first texts appeared in 1975: the experimental poems, Antymath & mata, and Tradizioni e canti popolari lucani. Subsequently he published the results of his research on Lucanian culture: Centri intellettuali e poeti della Basilicata del Secondo Cinquecento (1978) and Basilicata tra Umanesimo e Barocco (1980). Pursuing his cultural studies as means of reflection on the Problem of the South, Nigro produced essays on Antonio Persio and Bernardino Telesio, Vincenzo and Porfido Bruno, Carlucci, and Rocco Scotellaro and anthologies of Southern poets of the second half of the twentieth century. In 1980, Nigro made his debut as a dramatist with Il Grassiere, which was staged in the Abeliano Theater of Bari. Other important dramatic works: Bande e Discarica, Hohenstaufen and Il santo e il leone. The latter two were performed in 1986 by Giorgio Albertazzi's troupe. Poetry published: Giocodoca and La metafisica come scienza. These poems play on and experiment with mass media language and the transformation of contemporary culture via news theater and spectacle. Narrative: A certe ore del giorno e della notte, stories I fuochi del Basento (an historical novel that won the Supercampiello and Naples Prizes of 1987) the novels La baronessa dell'Olivento (1990), Ombre sull'Ofanto (1992), and Dio di levante (1994). In 1975, Nigro and a group of Puglian poets founded the avant-garde Interventi culturali. In 1982, he started to publish the journal Fragile, which metamorphosized into In-Oltre. The poems anthologized, all written in Melfitan, are previously unpublished.
