Doctor Gregory House is one of the best-known medical detectives on television. It is said that the protagonist of the medical drama House has been inspired by Sherlock Holmes and in fact, there are many parallels in the characters as well as in the methods of Gregory House and Sherlock Holmes. In the following, I am going to argue by means of Siegfried Kracauers Detektiv whether the medical detective Gregory House fits in his conception of a fictional detective. After this, I will show by means of Carlo Ginzburgs Morelli, Freud, and Sherlock Holmes: Clues and Scientific Method what Houses method exactly is. 2. Kracauer: House as a detective House is an unconventional and genius medical detective working in a fictitious clinic. When he first meets his patients he doesnt know anything about their lives and antecedents, so he can be seen as an outsider of the patients lives that has to restore order by finding out the underlying cause of their symptoms and to heal them. Another aspect of detective fiction is the fact that Gregory House and his team always have to deal with complex cases. In the pilot, Dr. House said Lets find out what kind of zebra were dealing with here. (1-01). In medical lingo, zebras are those strange cases that break the routine of a physicians world and for patients, they can be either good or bad: When patients first present themselves, physicians are trained to look first for the most common or most dangerous possible conditions. These are the cases that are dealt with routinely, and thus would never reach Dr. House. He wants to treat only the zebras. (The Medical Science of House, M.D. 25).
