The Coup d'état in the 1953 overthrow of the Iranian government was marked as a great success in the Intelligence community. The supposedly communist-leaning regime of Prime Minster Mohammad Mossadeq was overthrown, subsequently restoring shah to power. From the onset of the Cold War, U.S. military and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) intervened, to prop up or to establish regimes friendly to the United States regardless of their democratic status. The once acclaimed success of the operation, left a legacy of anti-Americanism that continues to diminish our foreign policy in the Middle East and set the motion for all later Middle Eastern terrorism. In August of 1953, the CIA conducted a covert operation (Operation Ajax) to overthrow the government in Iran. The democratically elected Prime Minster Muhammad Mossadeq was immensely popular amongst Iranians, advocating for democracy and national sovereignty. In 1951, Prime Minster Mossadeq nationalized Iran's petroleum industry. The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) had exclusive rights to extract and sell Iranian oil. AIOC, later known as British Petroleum, based in England and mainly owned by the British government, was threatened by its loss of revenue and political influence.
