The first letter was written bona fide and without any view to publication: but the epistolary form in the others was chosen, as a convenient fiction, by means of which the writers were enabled to address two very different classes of persons who were likely to be affected by Dr. Colenso s mischievous publication. The letters themselves bear witness that there never was any real disagreement between their respective writers, as to the management of the controversy: but since each of them had taken a different view of it, and adopted a distinct line of argument, they gladly seized upon what seemed the only method of working together, as they hope, for the general good. The facility, also, of the epistolary style was a great advantage to persons writing as they have written under the pressing burden of various other duties.
