Mit zahlreichen farbigen Werkabbildungen auf Bildtafeln und schwarzweissen Abbildungen im Text. Ganzleineneinband mit Schutzumschlag. 193 Seiten. 1301 Gramm. 31x23cm. Englisch. KLAPPENTEXT: Admirers of the work of Maurice Prendergast will welcome this richly illustrated monograph, the first in many years to present an overview of Prendergast's entire career. This volume interweaves a wealth of information on particular paintings (brought to light in the catalogue raisonrd that Mathews recently co-authored) with the intriguing story of the life of the artist. Although Prendergast participated in many important modernist movements in America and was a key figure in such exhibitions as »The Eight« and the Armory Show, he maintained a personal vision. This introduction to Prendergast's paintings, ideas, and affiliations creates a complex portrait, covering his early Impressionist street and beach scenes, painted primarily in watercolor (1894-1906); a middle phase of pointillist still lifes and loose, open brushwork, inspired by Cezanne and Matisse (1907-1913); and the colorful, more flattened figural paintings undertaken after the Armory Show confirmed his position as an artist fully cognizant of the European avantgarde. Throughout his career he was drawn to the newest styles and ideas and was among the first Americans to paint in a modern manner. Maurice Prendergast was born in Saint John's, Newfoundland, in 1858 and raised in Boston. His career began in commercial art, shifting to the fine arts in 1891, when he went to Paris to study. He returned to Boston in 1894. In 1914 he moved to New York and there enjoyed his greatest success. At the time of his death in 1924 he was recognized as one of the first American modernists. The author Nancy Mowll Mathews is Prendergast Curator at the Williams College Museum of Art. She is the author of several books on Mary Cassatt, and the co-author of the recent Prestel book Maurice Brazil Prendergast, Charles Prendergast: A Catalogue Raisonne. Alle Preise inkl. MwSt.
