James Cook: Gifts and Treasures of the South Seas illustrates and documents 500 of the finest of these objects for the first time. These pieces, brought back from Cook's three voyages (the first of which was in 1769), form an outstanding collection of non~European art, which today is unparalleled in both its breadth and scope. Amongst the scientists on the voyages were the German scholar Johann Reinhold Forster and his son. In cooperation with The Royal Society, which commissioned the British Admiralty to make the voyages, they returned to Germany with a vast collection, where it lay more or less undisturbed for over 200 years. It is only recently that specialists of the art of the Americas and Oceania have rediscovered the historical and cultural importance of this collection, now owned by the University in Cortingen (125 miles north of Frankfurt). This richly illustrated volume details the history of Cook's voyages and discusses the international importance of the collection in Gottingen.
