Schwabe & Co, Basel, 1999. 315p. Hard bound. Series: Chrêsis, Die Methode der Kirchenväter im Umgang mit der antiken Kultur, VI. Nice copy. 'The work is essentially a commentary on Gregory of Nyssa's 'Oratio consolatoria in Pulcheriam'. Pulcheria, the only child of the emperor Theodosius, died in 385 at the age of six. Thirty days after her death this sermon was deliverd at the Church of the Holy Apostles or the nearby mausoleum in Constantinople. Gantz's presentation is devided into three parts. First in a twenty page introduction the author presents the historical and literary context of the sermon, which she identifies as an example of the classical 'consolatio mortis'. Second the next seventeen pages contain the Greek text of the sermon and the author's German translation. (.). Third (.) is a detailed commentary on the text of Gregory's sermon. Her comments are meticulous and precise. (.) Following the Platonic argument Gregory affirms that death frees one from the evil of life. Nevertheless he does not denigrate human existence because the seed, which falls into the earth and dies, produces new life. Gantz sees this as a reaffirmation of Gregory's teaching on 'apocatastasis', which is the return to an original paradisiacal state.' (KENNETH B. STAINHAUSER in Church History, 2002, p.174).
