Much remains to be learnt from that period when colonies were still small and mobile and were called expeditions. Because expeditions were so manifestly concerned with movement in geographical space little attention has been given to the penetration of 'cognitive space'. The ways and means by which European travelers of the 19th century gained access to information other than what could be observed, sampled, and measured remain obscure. What exactly were the channels and vehicles by which knowledge of African societies and cultures crossed, as it were, the frontiers? Language, spoken and written, is the obvious answer to that question. Explorers not only walked; they talked their way into 'hostile Africa'. As soon as they began to compile manuals for other travelers they included, apart from advice on hygiene, equipment and the cost of services and trade goods, 'useful vocabularies'. These wordlists were as numerous as they were fragmentary. The present study presents and examines Swahili terms and phrases compiled from two published reports of expeditions, both traveling from the East Coast to the Great Lakes. One is the journal of the First Caravan, as it was called, of the White Fathers (1878-1879): "A l'assaut des pays nègres". The other one is Jérôme Becker's "La vie en Afrique", an account of the author's role in the Third Expedition sent out by the Brussels committee of the International African Association (1880-1883). These wordlists, with glosses in French and 'Standard' Swahili, and English, make up Part III. Apart from serving as necessary references for observations and interpretations offered in Part I and II, they have a documentary value regarding the use of Swahili made by European travelers during the period of staking out colonial territories that came to an end with the Berlin Conference of 1884/85.
