The text is in English and German and includes an introduction by Ian Jeffrey. It has 48 pages, illustrated throughout in black-and-white. Jens Leibchen constructs a fictional narrative of war by exploiting what we have come to expect of war reportage and photography. Series of photographs depict soldiers occupying city streets, children armed with weapons.these images are symbols that we identify through our collective knowledge of modern war coverage. Leibchen's smoky black-and-white composition only adds to the ambiance of a war-torn region. By cluing us in to his aim at the outset, the Artist allows us to deconstruct both the photographs and the act of their creation. In his introduction, Ian Jeffrey writes: ".not only does [Liebchen] present the elements in the practice of 'war photography' but at the same time he gives an account, by implication, of their developments." Thus, it is instructive, generally, of the ways in which information can be manipulated by playing on our pre-existing expectations, connotations, and emotional connections. Heckenhauer (Tübingen 1997); "Gesichter und Dinge", Neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (Berlin 1998); 55 mercer gallery (New York 1999); Europäischer Architekturfotografie-Preis, Bundeskunsthalle (Bonn 1999); "Body Urbanism" (Tirana 1999). Seit 1997 bildet die Dokumentation von Kunstereignissen einen Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit, darunter auf der documenta X, im Reichstagsgebäude Berlin "Künstler und ihre Werke" sowie gemeinsam mit Jörg Herold das Projekt "Archoplast 2000" (Staatliches Museum Schwerin, Expo 2000). DL07 is the UTM grid reference for Tirana in the Gazetteer of Albania published by the US Defence Mapping Agency. Liebchen visited Tirana during a period of relative peace. The photographs he made there however give the impression of a city under siege. He achieves this through photographs that allude to the imagery familiar to us from twentieth-century conflict photography: recently shelled buildings, boy soldiers, and the aftermath of a firing squad. In doing so he suggests, as written by Jeffrey in the introduction, 'that we think of war photography as a genre, making use of a set of conventions. It is no more authentic, he proposes, than the War Film or the Western. Normally, of course, we choose to see it as authentic, as truthful reportage. In this respect Liebchen's is subversive work, although in actuality he is merely asking us to reflect on our expectations.' In doing so 'Liebchen's postmodern reportage tells us to trust nothing - neither tale nor teller, and certainly not the postmodern deconstruction of both' (Parr).
