This selection of papers by international scholars deals with important aspects of English as a world language and the development of its main varieties. The book has four main sections. 'Overview' introduces two papers in which Jan Svartvik and Peter Trudgill survey the important questions in the field, addressing topics like the status of English as native, second or foreign language and the possible convergence or divergence of the varieties. 'Variety and Identity' comprises nine papers delineating the situation in New Zealand, Australian, South African and Canadian English, with special emphasis on the relation between language and identity. Seven papers, many of them corpus-based, deal with 'Grammatical Variation' between mainly British and American English, with references also to New Zealand and Australia. 'Choices', the final section, consists of six papers on the choice of teaching and learning models in countries where English is taught as a foreign language. All the papers were presented at MAVEN 97, an international conference on The Major Varieties of English held at Växjö, Sweden 20-22 November 1997. Together they give a multifaceted picture of the state of the art in a field of study which is rapidly growing in importance in all parts of the world.
