Texte in englischer und hebräischer Sprache. - The moment I put my eye to a kaleidoscope, feel that my mind, as the heterogeneous fragments of colors and lines assemble to compose regular figures, immediately discovers the procedure to be followed: even if it is only the peremptory and ephemeral revelation of a rigorous construction 1 to be replaced by another, in which the saure elements converge in a dissimilarpattern. (Italo Calvino) Likening the practice of literarg composition to a Grossword puzzle, Italo Calvino cited his novel lf on a winter's night a traveler, structured as a narrative frame containing story fragments, as an example. Each fragment encapsulates a shared elernent that influences the narrative frame, or, alternatively, is influenced by it. Perusal of Avraham Eilat's oeuvre, from the 1960s to the present, reveals that the paths of his artistic composition extend from and back into the body the human body as a shifting Field for intra- and extra-artistic representations recurs in each of his series in various modes and with variable meanings. Each of the series nourishes the "frame story" a mapping of the body as a social, ideological and personal territory and is nourished by it. Avraham Eilat is a multi-disciplinary artist, alert and restless, who has neuer ceased challenging the boundaries of his art, constantly updating his perceptions. In reviewing his oeuvre that has accumulated in the cousre of more than four decades, one is immediately struck by the wealth of his moves and transitions within the realm of art. His exuberant dance movements, however, insist upon focusing on a single facet, a critical aspect that runs through the choreography of his art like a genetic code an aspect that intertwines from the trunk of his seif, from his subconscious, coiling around his body and its Organs, inward and outward, through the private toward the public sphere. From the very outset of his artistic career Eilat has fabricated in the bodily structures in his works signs and Symptoms attesting to biological or cultural disruptions. He shifts meanings from the external envelope of the body into the internal tissues, from the organic body to cultural, social and political apparatuses. His abundant body of work reveals a sophisticated, critical artist who is well-versed in diverse mediums: sculpture, Installation, hybrid objects, painting, photography, etching, X-rays and CAT scans, photograms, video and mainly drawing. Drawing serves as a metaphor for his own artistic evolution it is a means of exploring the nature of artistic practice and of documenting the mutation of the visual. The exhibition Suspicious Symptoms focuses on this facet of his work, one that radiates in its vitality namely, drawing. Only drawing. Through the Corpus of drawing series on display, Eilat's intellectually hygienic perception and his fascinating approach to the "body" and its diverse strata, are deciphered an approach that is founded on a Set of tensions between the familiar and alien, curiosity and rejection, "scientific" and absurd, concrete and abstract, exactness and disruption, realism and Fantasy. Suspicious Symptoms consists of seven series of drawings on paper, in graphite, watercolor, chalk, sepia-toned India ink, and light (photograms), as well as a single digitally enlarged watercolor ..
