The difference in the moulded beauty of men and women then, lies in difference between points and lines. The line of Ukiyoe represents the perfection of that accumulation of points into the beauty of moulded form, and in the flow of its smooth and elegant line there is not one wasted element. It is extremely difficult to express this in a photograph. It was long considered virtuous for a Japanese woman to wrap and hide most of her body within the folds of her kimono. When an occassionaal glimpse might be caught of some part of her figure through these folds as she moved, the result could be both inexpressibly beautiful and erotic. The art of emitting this eroticism with the careful use of gesture and movement, when effective, could have tremendous emotional impact upon the viewer. Vividly drawn Ukiyoe, with its points and lines, made much effective use of this art, but expressing it in photography, with its essentially three dimensional feeling and use of shading, becomes a difficult task.
