Poeta, filósofo, historiador e dramaturgo, é considerado, a par de Goethe, um dos maiores autores da literatura alemã. "Wallenstein é uma série de três peças. A primeira chama-se O Campo de Wallenstein, é um Prólogo em 1 acto que se representa em 5 quartos de hora e tem as personagens mais diversas. É uma pintura do exército wallensteiniano, dá uma imagem da situação da Alemanha na Guerra dos 30 anos, mostra a disposição dos regimentos a favor e contra o general e destina-se a desenhar o terreno sobre o qual se desenrola o empreendimento de Wallenstein. Pode representar-se isolada, mas fica melhor se for associada à segunda peça. Esta segunda peça chama-se Os Piccolomini, do nome das duas personagens que mais intervêm. É em 5 actos, mas não chega a levar duas horas a representar. Esta peça compreende toda a exposição do Wallenstein e acaba quando os dados estão lançados. No fim tem um epílogo que forma a transição para a terceira peça. A terceira peça chama-se Queda e Morte de Wallenstein e é a tragédia propriamente dita. Como a exposição já teve lugar e os dados já estão lançados, é uma acção contínua e ininterrupta desde a primeira cena. Tem também 5 actos e representa-se em menos de 3 horas."
