La Storia degli scavi di Roma di Rodolfo Lanciani si interrompe nel 1878 (data finale di redazione dell'ultimo volume, rimasto inedito e pubblicato solo nel 2000). A partire da quell'anno, veniamo dunque a mancare di uno strumento fondamentale per la conoscenza della città antica, anche se disponiamo di singole ricerche su limitati periodi. È quasi inutile sottolineare che la messe di scoperte e di novità emerse nel corso di questi 125 anni costituisce un corpus immenso, ben difficilmente dominabile da chiunque, nonostante i contributi e le sintesi apparse soprattutto negli ultimi decenni (fondamentale tra tutti il Lexicon Topographicum Urbis Romae). Ma i lessici topografici, proprio per la loro natura sistematica e non cronologica, non possono in alcun modo sostituire una sintesi di carattere diacronico, essenziale per la storia degli studi, e per la storia tout-court. Questo primo volume degli Scavi di Roma comprende il periodo tra il 1878 e il 1921. I criteri utilizzati in quest'opera sono molto diversi (e non potrebbe essere altrimenti) rispetto a quelli adottati da Lanciani, che si risolvevano sostanzialmente in una serie di schede, divise per epoche e per settori topografici. Era essenziale, nel nostro caso, fornire anche una analisi critica e storiografica, oltre a una lista dei singoli trovamenti, ciò che costituisce ovviamente un arricchimento, ma allo stesso tempo complica notevolmente il compito dei redattori. I criteri adottati mirano appunto a fornire (accanto ai documenti) anche elementi di inquadramento critico e storiografico. Di qui la scelta di separare l'esposizione generale (necessariamente sintetica, e divisa per settori topografici) dal Repertorio degli scavi e delle scoperte.
