Excerpt: ...The best view of it is from a field on the S. side of the house. Just beyond Langney Farm is the turning to Pevensey, whilst the road straight on leads to Hailsham. The railway is crossed at the West-Ham and Pevensey Station, near the entrance to the former village; another 4 m., past West-Ham Church, and the main entrance to Pevensey Castle faces the traveller. West-Ham Church,b dedicated to St. Mary, is a building of large size (for it will accommodate 800 persons), chiefly Perpendicular, temp. Henry VI..though the S.transept and S. nave wall are Norman. A quadrangular area at the N.W. corner of the nave was long used as a coal and wood store!!! A partial reparation of the whole edifice, at a cost of 3000Z, was carried out in 187 7 period, not very far back, when the Pevensey Levels were continually submerged, and really were a marsh Now at that time the range of higher ground which intervenes half-way between East-Bourne and Pevensey would present itself strangely to the eye, and would seem a sort of island. If the form of this patch of higher ground be accurately traced on a good map, it will be found to assume the form of a long and narrow strip of land, slightly curved at one extremity, and with a projecting arm at the other. Three points or extremities are thus formed, and it is very remarkable to observe that the appellations of the three extremities all end in the form of' ness' or 'ney,' (that is,1 nez,') namely, 'Langney,' 'Rickney,' and ' Blackness.' Langney will thus show itself to be properly placed on the point of the upland, while Langney Point, at the end of the beach, will prove to be only a secondary name.
