From his birth in Poland in 1913 to the day he learned that he was to be a co- recipient, with Egypt's Anwar el-Sadat, of the Nobel Peace Prize. The early chapters of the book deal with the evolu- tion of Begin's personal Jewish identity, his leadership in the Revisionist move- ment, his imprisonment by the Soviet authorities in 1940, his period of forced laborlin Arctic Russia, and his arrival in 1942 in what was then Palestine, where he proceeded to reorganize the almost defunct Irgun Z'vai Leumi into a highly motivated and effective \ underground force which played a crucial role in Bri- tain's decision to withdraw from Palestine. A large section of the book is devoted to Begin's activities as opposition leader between 1949 and his party's elec- toral victory in May 1977 - his travels on five continents on behalf of his party, his meetings with such world statesmen as Charles De Gaulle, William P. Rogers, Henry Kissinger, Richard M. Nixon and jimmy Carter.
