This book is one of few studies on the microeconomic performance of Indian industry. It tackles questions relating to the nature of competition in Indian industry - whether the private sector in India is concentrated, and whether firms in concentrated private sector industries compete or collude. It considers the implications of such behaviour for the performance of this sector.Using a vast data set, pertaining to 688 firms across 42 industries, the author analyses the interlinkages between structure measured as concentration ratios, conduct measured by advertising expenditures and performance measured by profitability, in Indian industry since the mid-seventies. Unlike most studies of this kind, both static and dynamic aspects of structure, conduct and performance of Indian industry are examined.This analysis provides important insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian industrial sector which would be useful in assessing the feasibility of the current reforms programme.
