Charles Kingsley, Books, Fiction and Literature, Fiction, The Water-Babies, Once upon a time there was a little chimney-sweep, and his name was Tom. That is a short name, and you have heard it before, so you will not have much trouble in remembering it. He lived in a great town in the North country, where there were plenty of chimneys to sweep, and plenty of money for Tom to earn and his master to spend. He could not read nor write, and did not care to do either; and he never washed himself, for there was no water up the court where he lived. He had never been taught to say his prayers. He never had heard of God, or of Christ, except in words which you never have heard, and which it would have been well if he had never heard.

THE WATER BABIES and SELECTED POEMS - 1863 - To my youngest son GRENVILLE ARTWUR and to all other good little boys COME READ ME A RIDDLE, EACH GOOD LITTLE MAN IF YOU CANNOT READ IT, NO GROWN-UP FOLK CAN. CHPRLES KINGSLEY CHARLEKS INGSLEwYa s born on June 12th 1819 at Holne Vicarage in Devonshire. He was the second son of the Reverend Charles Kingsley. His mother was the daughter of Nathan Lucas, an Englishman resident in Barbados West Indies. Of the other four sons of the Reverend and Mrs. Charles Kingsley, Gerald, the eldest, became a lieutenant in the Navy and died of an epidemic fever on board his ship George Henry became a doctor and great traveller, and Henry, the youngest, a novelist of great repute. Another son, Herbert, died very young. As a child Charles Kingsley junior lived successively at Holne, at Clifton Nottinghamshire, at Barnack in the Fen country and at Clovelly, North Devon of which his father held the living from 1830-36. Charles was a precocious, sensitive child. He was twice attacked by brain fever accompanied by hallucinations. In 1831 he was sent to a preparatory school at Clifton Bristol where he soon proved himself a good Latin scholar and a great lover of natural history. While at Clifton he witnessed the Bristol riots of August I 83 1 and saw some scenes of horror which made an indelible impression on his mind. In 1832 he went to the Grammar School at Helston, Cornwall, where he did well but was not popular with his schoolmates. When in 1836 his father became rector of St. Lukes Chelsea, Charles accompanied his parents to London and for the next two years continued his schooling at Kings College. In 1838 he entered Magdalen College Cambridge and a year laterobtained a scholarship. He read classics and mathematics and practised every kind of sport including boxing. During his years at the University 1838-42 he was much troubled by religious doubts and by moral-psychological conflicts springing from a somewhat over-severe conscience. These he confided in many letters to his future wife, Fanny Grenfell, whom he had met during the summer vacation of 1839. He was ordained in July 1842 and appointed curate at Eversley, a village situated in Hampshire on the borders of Windsor Forest. In 1844 he married Fanny Grenfell and the same year was given the living of Eversley which he was to retain for the rest of his life. His first literary work, The Saints Tragedy, a verse drama on the life of St. Elisabeth of Hungary, was published in 1848. Yeast, a novel dealing with the conditions of the agricultural labourer appeared in serial form in Frasers Magazine the same year it was followed by Alton Locke, Tailor G3 Poet, an indictment of the sweat-shop practice in the tailoring trade. These two works gave expression to Kingsleys deep sympathy for the suffering of the working classes and to his assi ion ate interest in the movements of social reform which coincided with the industrial unrest and the revolutionary upheavals of the late eighteenfo ties. In 1848 he became actively associated with Christian Socialism under its leader J. D. Maurice, and under the pseudonym Parson Lot wrote tracts and pamphlets on topical social problems, as well as articles for the journals Politics for the People and the Christian Socialist. Overexertion in his parish work coupled with over-excitement and controversy arising from his apparent championship of socialism led toseveral breakdowns in his health and, as a result, to periods of enforced idleness... This delightful text comprises the delightful children’s novel written by Charles Kingsley, accompanied by a wonderful selection of some of his most famous poems. The Water Babies is a timeless children’s classic, detailing the surprising story of Tom, a chimney sweep, who, after being chased out of the house of an upper-class girl named Ellie, falls into a river and transforms into a ‘water baby’- an insect that sheds its skin. Although mainly a fantastic story of Tom’s moral education, The Water Babies is underpinned by themes such as the treatment of the poor and Christian teachings, as well as containing satirical leanings in support of Darwin’s The Origins of Species. A deserving addition to any bookshelf and a wonderful story to be read to children, The Water Babies remains a favourite of discerning parents and sleepy children to this day. First published in its entirety in 1863, this scarce text is republished now with an introductory biography of the author. Charles Kingsley was a university professor, priest of the Church of England, novelist and historian. Paperback, Label: Garnsey Press, Garnsey Press, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 2015-06-29, Studio: Garnsey Press.
