A wide range of basic and applied research including various polymers, copolymers, blends, mixtures and composites has been carried out since the establishment of the conducting properties of intrinsic conductive polymers. Until about 30 years ago, all carbon-based polymers were considered rigidly as insulators. The idea that electricity could be generated by plastics was thought to be absurd. In fact, plastics have been widely used for this property by the electronics industry. They are used as inactive packaging and insulation materials. This very narrow perspective rapidly changes when a new class of polymers is discovered, called intrinsically conductive polymers or electroactive polymers. Consequently, the ultimate understanding of the physical and chemical properties of these materials has been pursued, while the facets applied have progressed very rapidly, crossing the boundaries between disciplines. Conductive polymers are organic polymers which generate electricity. Such compounds may be either metal or semi-conductive. The main advantage of conducting polymers is their processability, primarily through dispersion. Conducting polymers are not thermoplastics in general. However, organic materials, such as polymers, are used. They can offer high electrical conductivity, but they do not have mechanical properties similar to those of other polymers. This book, Aspects on Fundamentals and Applications of Conducting Polymers, provides information on the development of fundamental principles and certain polymer applications.
