London: Middlesex University Press, 1998 The first English translation of a novel recounting the erotic and exotic exploits of the warlord Mafarka in North Africa, originally banned for obscenity on its release in 1909. Mafarka Le Futuriste was written originally in French and first appeared in Paris in 1909; it was then translated into Italian, not by Marinetti himself, but by his secretary, Decio Centi. Set on the north coast of Africa at the turn of the century, the novel describes the adventures of the brutal eponymous warlord, who applies technical wizardry as Zarathustran willpower to the construction of an aeroplane-like artefact which is brought to life emphatically without the aid of any woman. The outrageous misogyny of the work does not, however, prevent it from being a fascinating and sustained example of futurist theory with regard to language and metaphor. The aesthetic significance of the novel is evaluated in the translators introduction.. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. New. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
